Murray Inc. went Bankrupt.
Recently, Briggs & Stratton purchased some assets from Murray, Inc.
Briggs & Stratton is currently working on migrating these assets (i.e.
parts, accessories, etc.) to our parts numbering system. Unfortunately, not all
Murray parts will be available for sale through Briggs & Stratton.
Briggs and Stratton has made some number modifications.
Please keep in mind, your Murray part number will show the letters
"MA" at the end of the number.
Murray Blurb
Its like a Murray Blog, but I only want to do it once.
Murray lawn mowers are well known for their strength and reliability.
Riding mowers and walk-behind Murray are sold, as well as chore tools like
cultivators and trimmers. But we only Feature The parts for Murray Mowers .Most Murray's
were sold with their tough 12.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engines, Some
were sold with the less expensive yet very durable 11 HP Tecumseh Engine.
Many Murray mower owners will agree: Murray lawn mowers give you a lot of
mower for your money.
Murray riders were available with several different options. Lawn mowers can
be selected with different cutting decks, which facilitates cut different widths,
Generally speaking the narrower the cut, the less shelving of the lawn occurs.
The larger decks are great because you get done faster. Narrower cutting decks
can also help in maneuverability and loading. 36" and 38" inch models
were preferred for small backyards needing gate accessibility, while th4 40, 42,
46 and 50" cutting decks were primarily targeted at larger land owners and
budget minded professional cutters. The 3 blade larger decks did tend to give a
smoother cut than that of the two blade deck, but were not as efficient at handling
tall grass or wet grass. Although Mulch kits were offered for all Murray riding
mower decks above 38",the most effective Murray Ultra combination was the
40 and 42 inch models.
The drive train combinations for Murray lawn mowers were chosen with
alternative transmissions, including an automatic drive, a hydrostatic
-automatic drive that is foot operated but the most popular was the entry level Murray
with a manual gear drive. As the price went up, so did the features and
was made available with an available with 5 or 6-speed version Foote, and
Hydro-Gear were the most popular transaxles used by Murray.
We carry the full Hydro-Gear,
Foote and Tecumseh
Peerless
transmission part lines.
The now defunct Murray Inc. lawn mower company offered engine
options including an exclusively designed overhead valve, which improves
power cut down on engine noise, and increased fuel economy. Briggs used a
cast iron cylinder sleeve and aluminum pistons for many of the Briggs and
Stratton powered Murray lawn tractors which can help prolong the life engine. In
later years and models, a V-twin cylinder Vanguard was added to the product
line. This made Murray one of the toughest lawn mowers in its price class.
One of Murray's better innovations was the design of their Step Through
models In addition the riding Murray lawn mowers were designed so
the mower operator can very easily get on and off the riding mower seat .
Murray lawn mowers have long been cursed with steering wear problems. This was
rectified by a few modifications to the steering gear kit. The new steering
controls made steering the around the yard a much more pleasurable experience.
Murray lawn tractors or garden tractors can be used with accessories like plows
and rakes, and mulching machines.
Murray Walk behind lawn mowers were the prime seller at most walmart
and Home Depot stores. The Briggs and Stratton Classic 3.5 HP had a price point
of 79.00 during their first years. These could last many people for years when
properly serviced. The 4,5 and 5 horsepower models were available as push
mowers or self-propelled mowers. The self-propelled Murray walk behind
mowers have a belt drive from a secondary pulley. The belt was routed around the
blade adapter ant turned at a 90 degree angle on some models. This was not the
best design for most grass cutting applications. Dead grass would collect under
the belt cover, and create rust on the mower deck, as well as causing premature
belt wear. The direct drive from the engine crankshaft to the deck pulley was a
much better design. It added power to help the mower move, requiring less effort
from the mower operator.
Murray Self-propelled lawn mowers were available with front or
rear wheel drive The most popular drive wheel is the 71133. It is designed with
an internal cog gear drive system, protected by an outer dust cover. The rear
non drive wheel is most commonly known as a 71132, There is a variation of the
71132 that has a steel roller bearing. The part number for the Murray bearing
wheel is 71134, and is available here.
This number may not be in your owners manual, but if your mower calls for an
71132, the 71134 is a direct crossover.
Grass clippings disposal options including mulching, bagging and side
discharging onto your lawn. Murrays Convertible Murray lawn mowers allowed
for switching between these three options with its 3 in 1 option..

Murray lawn mowers are not currently being sold anywhere. The last rumor we
were privy to was that Briggs and Stratton was going to have their newly
acquired Snapper mower company start production on a new Murray Product line
possibly due out in 2008. You can go to Murray.com website and see if there are
any new developments.
